INDEPENDENTLY
DEPENDENT
By Rick Ashlock
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening
the strong. You cannot help small men by tearing down big
men.You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot
lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot
keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You
cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class
hatreds. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You
cannot build character and courage by taking away a man's
initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by
doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
The Ten
Cannots, published in 1916
by William J. H. Boetcker (1873-1962) but often attributed to
Abraham Lincoln.
One of the real challenges in "rightly
handling" the Bible is to reconcile verses which could seem to
contradict each other. When you consider how large the
Bible is and how many different people contributed to its
content, it is truly amazing that there are so few passages
which are difficult to reconcile with each other. Most
of those passages are from different books and can be
reconciled by looking at the context and intent of the
different authors. However, one instance of apparent
contradiction that has always puzzled me is found in Galatians
chapter six, verses two and five. In verse two, Paul
writes, "Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the
law of Christ." Just a few verses later Paul writes,
"For each will bear his own load." Paul seems to
simultaneously be saying, "Lend each other a helping hand" and
"Do it yourself." As a Roman emperor once said, "This
vexes me. I'm terribly vexed." As usual, an
examination of the context helps resolve the apparent
contradiction. Galatians 6:1-5 reads: Brethren,
even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are
spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each
one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be
tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill
the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something
when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But each one
must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for
boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to
another. For each one will bear his own load. Even
though verses two and five are close together, it is clear
that Paul is talking about two different things. Early
in this passage, Paul is discussing the duty upon Christians
to be a source of encouragement and instruction to each
other. We must be willing and able to help each other
during our struggles whether we are struggling with matters of
this life or our walk with God. However, he reminds us
to do so in a spirit of humility, fully aware of our own
weaknesses and that we, too, can stray if we are not
diligent. He then reiterates the need for personal
vigilance by saying that we can take no sense of
accomplishment from the actions of others. For instance,
we can't think, "Well, the preacher visited Bob in the
hospital so I don't need to go," or "The church has Bible
classes so I don't need to share the word with anyone."
We need each other and need to be there for each other.
However, we each have our own cross to bear and God demands
that we bear it.
