CRACKING THE CODE
Part II
By Rick Ashlock

"The law respects form less than substance."  California Civil Code.

Last week I began a look at
The Da Vinci Code phenomena which I will conclude today.   In review, I tried to separate some of the fact and fiction around Mary Magdalene and discussed another fairly recent film concerning the life of Christ which many regard as blasphemous, The Last Temptation of Christ.  Today, I would like to begin by looking a play entitled Corpus Christi
As with
The Da Vinci Code, I need to state that I have not seen Corpus Christi nor read the script.  According to Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia of fairly reliable content,

Corpus Christi is a passion play by Terrence McNally dramatizing the story of Christ and the Apostles. It is highly controversial due to its depiction of Christ and the Apostles as gay men living in modern day Texas. It contrasts modern devices like television with anachronisms like Roman occupation. This Judas betrays Jesus (in this version known as Joshua) because of sexual jealousy.  It received both critical acclaim for its exploration of gay themes in Christianity and widespread condemnation for what many view as blasphemy.

The ministry of Christ consisted of many different things.  He taught sermons to thousands, fed multitudes, healed countless people, and patterned true humanity for all to see.  However, the primary focus of His earthly ministry was to prepare His disciples, specifically His Apostles, to carry on His work after His ascension.  He gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom Of God not so he could have a desk just outside the "pearly gates" and be Heaven's doorman but to establish Christ's church on earth.
By depicting Jesus and the Apostles as gay men,
Corpus Christi attacks the focus of Christ's work.  It effectively claims Christ's good works were motivated by homosexual desire rather than the true and pure love of God.  This is closely akin to the Pharisees attributing His healing miracles to the power of Satan.  Proclaiming Jesus as the Son of God but also as a homosexual, particularly with His gay partners being His disciples is inherently blasphemous.
According to Wikipedia
, The Da Vinci Code claims, among many other things, that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene who was never a prostitute, bore Jesus' daughter after His crucifixion, was the real "holy grail" in that she carried the blood of Christ within her, and was portrayed in the Bible as the Apostle John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, because the early church leaders feared the "sacred feminine."  As previously stated, I do not believe that the Bible teaches us that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute before her acquaintance with Jesus.  The other claims concerning Jesus and Mary are absurd speculation allegedly based upon the interpretation of two of Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings, The Last Supper and Mona Lisa
Based on my very limited research, I believe that
The Da Vinci Code falls somewhere in between a perhaps well-meaning but misguided The Last Temptation of Christ and the patently blasphemous Corpus Christi as an inaccurate depiction of who Christ was.
My biggest problem with
The Da Vinci Code is not that it claims that Jesus was married and had a child.   Those are not sinful acts and if Jesus had been married and had children, it would not have meant that He was spiritually imperfect.  Rather, it is the way The Da Vinci Code attacks the veracity of the Bible, the ultimate work of the Holy Spirit, and, in a manner similar to Corpus Christi, impugns the relationship between Jesus and at least one of His Apostles.
The insistence of our modern culture in finding something sexual between Jesus and John undoubtedly results from the prevalence of sexual titillation.  We have come to equate love and sex in a way less "sexualized" cultures never did.  This is also evidenced in the revisionist view of the relationship of Jonathan and David.
Some will say the author of
The Da Vinci Code has clearly stated that it is a work of fiction and thus should be regarded as harmless entertainment rather than heresy.  However, in some of the interviews he has given he has clearly tried to blur the line between fact and fiction.  The plot works best, if at all, when the reader buys into as many of the premises as possible.
I'm not a big believer in boycotts.  I am a big believer in the free exchange of ideas and insights.  If you choose to read the novel
The Da Vinci Code or see the film based upon it, I hope and pray that you are able to spot the inaccuracies it contains and trust that the Bible has the true story of who Jesus is and what He wants us to be.
